Hora Sfakion

The south-eastern region of the Prefecture of Chania is called Municipality of Sfakia and includes the villages Hora Sfakion, Anopoli, Agios Ioannis, Agia  Roumeli, Asfendou, Loutro, Patsianos, Skaloti, Impros, Askifou and  Fragkokastello. The distamce to Chania is about 70 kilometres.

Entire Sfakia is characterized by the natural beauty of wild mountainous landscape which is combined unique with the sea. Sfakia includes the bigger part of the ?White Mountains? with highest top the Rimes (2454 metres). Also it includes the Gorge of Samarias, one of the most popular sights in Crete. Other gorges in Sfakia are the Gorge of Kladou, the Lofts, the Gorge of Elygias, Aradainas, Sfakiano, Improu, Asfendou and the Gorge of Kalikrati.

For the name Sfakia exist 3 explanations:

The first explanation is from the name that means earthy gap, something that suits because there are many deep gorges. The second version supports that Hora Sfakion was initially said ?Sfikia? and became Sfakia, and the last version that it is from a flower with the name ?Sfaka?, that means very bitter.

In Hora Sfakion exist only basic infrastructures: petrol station, mini-market, post, office Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, drugstore, police station and ATM. There are also TAXI and daily itineraries of bus from/to Chania.

How you go to the Hora Sfakion:

Hora Sfakion is located 70 kilometres southern from Chania. In order you want to go here from northern Crete, you will pass Vrisses, the village with running waters and the barbecues. From this point and afterwards the street permanently goes up to the plateau of Askifou and Impros, from where begins the descent to the southern coast and Hora Sfakion. For little you will move beside the deep Gorge of Impros, while below for the first time you have a to the southern sea of Crete (Lybian Sea). The islands of Gavdos and Gavdopoula can be seen when the atmosphere is clean, the most southern islands of Europe.

In Hora Sfakion the street ends in a parking place, where in summer are many tourist buses, waiting for those that cross the Gorge of Samaria and come in Hora Sfakion with the ferry boat from Agia Roumeli. Additional boats leave from here to Loutro, Sougia, Paliochora and the Island of Gavdos.
